Algeria foils weapons smuggling attempt near Libyan border

Algerian forces have foiled an attempt to smuggle a shipment of weapons across the country’s eastern border with Libya, west of the Libyan city of Ghat, following an intelligence-led monitoring operation targeting suspicious movements.

According to a report by Afrique-Asie, the operation resulted in the seizure of a cache of weapons including Kalashnikov rifles, automatic weapons, ammunition, and hand grenades.

Some of the weapons are suspected to be of Israeli origin, the report said.

The report noted that the interception came after intelligence indicated the activity of organized criminal networks involved in cross-border arms trafficking.

Preliminary investigations cited by Afrique-Asie also suggested the shipment may be linked to elements affiliated with the forces of Khalifa Haftar, with suspicions pointing to a possible role by his son Saddam Haftar.

The report further indicated that investigators are examining the alleged involvement of a Libyan national who also holds Algerian citizenship and resides in the United Kingdom.

Sources suggested the weapons shipment may have been airlifted into Ghat airport from a Gulf country before an attempt was made to smuggle it across the border
